| NSU TEACHING INFO |
I sometimes get requests from prospective students asking about my guitar teaching at NSU. Here's the scoop! Non-music majors are allowed to take guitar. Students must have their own instruments. The classes work easier for everyone if you have an acoustic guitar to study on. I only teach pick-style playing (not finger-style or classical). Although the classes are listed as being at specific times, they are really private lessons that are scheduled individually. At the beginning of each semester I have a meeting with all of the students at once and we work up a tentative schedule. I like to teach on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 PM. I avoid teaching more than that as I have so many other demands on my time. I also have a full time career elsewhere and need time for my own practicing and playing, as well as time to spend with my family. Although I sincerely love teaching guitar, for practical reasons, there is only so much time available for me to teach. I have to study guitar, as my students do, as we are all perpetually students. If I didn't devote time to my own studies, I wouldn't feel right about teaching. I put in time practicing and studying, and I expect my students to do the same. I try to group students with likely lesson partners. The students like it better and have a better time of the whole thing. I like keeping it to no more than 2 students at once, but may group 3 if I feel it's appropriate. Private (individual) lessons are generally reserved for advanced students and/or music majors. If you are a non-music major, you should sign up for Music 1700-V1N (Guitar Minor Study) If the class is full when you sign up contact me to discuss if it's appropriate to "force-add" you in. Guitar Major Study 1710-V1N or 1710-V2N is for guitar students who are ready to devote themselves to serious guitar learning - really it's designed for music majors who want to have guitar as a principal instrument. This is set up in 2 parts with 3710-V1N being the advanced block of this study. I will except non-music majors into these sections. Here are some .pdf files with the official class descriptions: Visit Berklee Press or any good music store to buy the Berklee Text Books If you need more information - contact me.
